Nitrogen (N) Sources

Alfalfa Meal. This soil conditioner is a reasonable alternative to blood meal. Its carbohydrates and proteins encourage microbial activity in the soil. The alfalfa’s extensive root system provides micronutrients to plants from deep below the earth’s surface. Typical analysis: 2.5-3% N, based on protein.

Feather Meal.
Crops that need steady, long-lasting nitrogen will love Feather Meal. Because of its low water solubility, leaching is almost nonexistent. The nitrogen becomes available to plants through microbial activity. Typical analysis: 13-0-0.

Fish Meal.
This meal is an excellent source of organic nitrogen and phosphorous. Its high levels of carbohydrates and protein stimulate biological activity and increase tilth. Fish Meal is long-lasting and does not leach. Its nutrients are released through the soil’s microbial activity. Typical analysis: 9-3-1.

Phosphorus (P) Sources

Bone Meal, Steamed. Use this product as a general application or as a starter fertilizer for new plants and transplants. Bone Meal is an excellent source of plant-available phosphorus. It also provides calcium and a small amount of nitrogen. Typical analysis: 1-13-0.

Potassium (K) Sources

Jersey Greensand. This iron-potassium silicate is mined from natural deposits in the Garden State itself: New Jersey. Greensand loosens clay, increases moisture by up to ten times and contains over 30 trace minerals. These properties make it a perfect soil conditioner for both agricultural and horticultural applications.

Other Soil Amendments

Aragonite. Add some surf to your turf with this sea calcium. Aragonite has exceptionally high levels of calcium and low levels of magnesium, which could tie up your soil’s nutrients. When used with gypsum, Aragonite can offset soil’s high magnesium levels. Typical analysis: 0-0-0-39 Ca.

Crab Meal. This potent organic fertilizer is made from the blue crab after 40% of its meat is removed. The shells are kiln dried, then pulverized into a beige-colored meal containing over 30 trace elements and vitamins. NPK averages a 5-2-5 analysis with over 13% natural calcium, which virtually eliminates blossom-end rot in tomatoes and peppers. Apply five pounds per 45-60 feet of garden row or two tablespoons per one-gallon pot.

Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate). If your soil has an adequate or high pH level but lacks calcium, use Gypsum. This quick-reaction product loosens the soil, encourages soil life and adds needed calcium. Gypsum also deters weeds, since most prefer acidic soils. When combined with water, the sulfur forms a weak sulfuric acid that releases calcium from the soil. Typical analysis: 0-0-0-23 Ca. -17 S.

Meneffe Humate.
This rich, humus based granular soil conditioner improves acidity levels and acts as an organic chelator, which helps the plants utilize the nutrients in the soil. It also stimulates microbial growth. When used with balanced fertilization, Meneffe Humate can significantly improve poor soils.

Hi-Cal Lime (Pulverized). This product raises soil pH and increases the release of phosphorous and potassium from their insoluble compounds, making them plant available. Use it with Gypsum on soils where magnesium is high. Hi-Cal Lime also loosens clay soil. When soil is sandy, it binds particles together. For immediate use and a gradual breakdown, use the product in pulverized form. It contains less than 5% magnesium oxide.

Kelp Meal. If you do nothing else to your soil this year, apply Kelp Meal. It contains nutrients from A to Z, conditions the soil, builds soil life, retains moisture and stimulates root and plant growth. It also improves yields and reduces the effect of drought and frost. Kelp Meal is made from dehydrated Ascophylum nodosum seaweed. Because it isn’t water soluble, the nutrients must be released by microbial activity. Therefore, allow two weeks for Kelp Meal to become available to plants.
